A rehabilitation physician or generalist physician with an interest in rehabilitation medicine would be an ideal candidate to fill this position. The Halvar Jonson Centre for Brain Injury is a unique, publicly-funded comprehensive rehabilitation program that offers longer-term rehabilitation to survivors of severe traumatic or other acquired brain injury. The program uses an interdisciplinary team approach to rehabilitation with the physicians as nominal team leaders. In addition to rehabilitation team leadership responsibilities, the physician serves as the admitting doctor and is responsible for all day-to-day medical care as well as arranging appropriate follow-up, consultations, and investigations as required. Pre-admission assessment and screening is performed by the physicians and some travel would be required. There is some third-party work as patients are often involved in litigation, insurance claims, or other legal issues. Training and mentoring is provided. In addition to rehabilitation medicine skills, ACLS and recent familiarity with acute neurological problems would be an asset. Mental health experience and general medical skills would also be very helpful. The position is hospital-based and at present, there are no outpatient responsibilities. Hours of work are typically from 0830 to 1630. The Halvar Jonson Centre is co-located within the Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury in Ponoka, Alberta and on-call responsibilities are shared with the Adult Psychiatry program and Seniors Mental Health program. While on call, the physician is responsible for all after hours admissions, walk-in psychiatric assessments, and medical problems within the 320 bed complex. Remuneration for regular duties is primarily fee for service with a small administrative stipend for contributing to the program management team. On-call work is fee for service with an additional generous on call stipend. On call accommodation is provided. The position currently reports to the Department Chief, Halvar Jonson Centre for Brain Injury and by-laws governing hospital privileges are currently under revision.
